Water Cycle Activity

In class we did an activity where we set up bowls representing diffrent water sources such as the ocean, lake, rivers etc. half of the class had spoons taking water from a certain source and putting it into another. (nobody had the same route) While the rest of the class had cups representing clouds and took the water from the spoons and put the water into a certain source. This activity taught me a lot about the water cycle and how water evaporates and ends up somewhere else. Also it taught me how a waters path can be disturbed and the water will end up not where it is supposed causing an increase in water in some places and a decrease in others. I would do this activity again because it taught me a lot and it is a fun activity.

Oil Lab

In class we did an oil lab where we traced 3 source maps on one piece of paper and marked all the spots where the 3 maps over lapped. Then we had split into groups and the groups had to use their coordinates to drill oil. From this lab i learned in order to be able to hold oil in a certain spot the spot has to have a resevoir, a trap and heat and pressure. I would do this lab again because i learned a lot and it is a fun activity to do with a group.

Autumn a poem by Emily Dickinson, describes the changes of season in this case Autumn occuring. In this poem Ms. Dickinson had to have knowledge in weather because the entire poem is about weather. This knowledge helped her so she can describe various diffrences in the changes in Autumn.
If there was no mention of weather in this poem there would be no poem or the poem would be very dull because the whole poem is abotu weather. This poem helps me understand more about weather because it has some facts that i didnt know happened in the change of season.

Autumn by Emily Dickinson
The morns are meeker than they were;
The nuts are getting brown;
The berry’s cheek is plumper,
The rose is out of town.

The maple wears a gayer scarf,
The field a scarlet gown.
Lest I should be old-fashioned,
I’ll put a trinket on

Seatbelts

Thirty years ago it wasnt required for people to wear seatbelts while driving in the car. Now it is required thirty years ago people that got into accidents without seatbelts on were severly injured or killed. That can still happen today, but seatbelts help prevent you from getting hurt in a crash. I am thankful for seatbelts because without them a lot more people would die in a car crash per year that have to.

Researches have discovered a gene that can block the spread of HIV

February 29 2008 researches at the University of Alberta along with a scientist at the University of Pennsylvania disvovered a gene that is able to block HIV. This will also help prevent AIDS. The gene is called TRIM22 can block HIV infection in a cell culture by preventing the assembly of the virus. TRIMM22 is a gene in the human body and is an essential part of our body's ability to fight off HIV. The team is very excited about there discovery and hopes that this will stop HIV from occuuring anymore which will therefore help prevent AIDS.

Unprecedemted method to predict ALS, Aarkinsons disease

January 16 2008 in Rochester Minnesota, new Mayo clinic study details an unprecedented method to predict brain aging disorders or Parkinson's disease. They studied common variations within axon guidance pathway genes. Also the identified several gene variations which predicted people at a high risk of Parkinson's disease. The probability of findings of this disease were less then one in a trillion so the chance of getting this disease is very rare.

Mexico open a Canal

On tuesday Mexican authorities cautiously opened a canal through a enormous landslide that blocked a major river in Southern Mexico. This happened in november and it swept away an entire community. The landslide buried the town of San Juan de Grijalva, it also blocked a section of the Grijalva river that kicked up a huge wave of water killing nineteen people. The blocking of the river is what made the canal.

Mythebusters

In mythbusterscement truck dutch subs, Adam and Jaime blew up a cement truck the explosion was so big you can barely see any of the truck left. The mythbusters followed the lab saftey rules, they stayed far away except for a camera man who was guared from the explosion. Also the used gloves but they didnt wear saftey goggles during the explosion. In this episode they used science by building dynamite and finding a safe enviroment to blow up the truck. If you want a career in special effects you would need science to find out about body parts and mass etc. you would need science for almost every career especially special effects.

Earthquakes

Earthquakes happen when two plates under the crust rub against eachother after a while of doing this they stick but still continue to push eachother. After a while the plates will break from all the pressure and cause an earthquake. break causing the ground to shake. Earthquakes occur all over the planet so you can not hide from an earhquake. Also earthquakes that happen under the ocean floor causes tsunamis. The focus is the spot under ground when the plates break. The epicenter is the place on top of the focus above ground. Also the focal depth is the distance from the earth's surface to the focus. That is some imformation about earthquakes.

Speed

You can find velocity, time and distance on your own. To find Velocity you divide time by distance you can do the same thing to find time. To find distance you have to multiply velocity by time. Velocity is its speed in a certain direction. Velocity is the rate of change.

scientist find out a way to prevent cancer?

Febuary 26 2007, Weizmann institute scientist discover a group of genes that slow cell division and prevent cancer. In Rehovot, Israel Cancer and normal cells divide diffrently. When a normal cell gets a signal to divide, It activates a Braking system. That stops cell division and returns the cell to a resting state. When the braking system is faulty, uncontrolled cell division and growth of cancer can begin. Weizmann institute scientist studied this system of brakes, and identified the number of genes involved.

Making mice enhanced colored vision

On march 23 2007, researches at John Hopkins school of medicine found mice expressing a human light receptor. In addition to their own can make new light vision. This is a sign that the brain can adapt far more rapidly to new sensory then anticipated. This work also suggests when a the first primate inherited a newe type of photoreceptor more then 40 million years ago. It probably experienced immediate color inhancement, which may have allowed this trait to spread quickly. They did this research to see if they can make an organism have colored vision.

Lost Extra Credit

I watched the show Lost and found out how it relates to science. Lost has many types of organisms in the show. For example it has a cow and plants for producers. Also for consumers their are humans and a cat. Lastly there are many decomposers on the island. For example their are many types of bugs, mosquitos, and flys. Those are some reasons how the tv show Lost relates to science.

Consumer

I learned about consumers, A consumer can't make its own food. It depends on producers to get food for them or it eats the producer. A consumer is a scavenger. One interesting fact is consumers usually get their food by eating other organisms. Another interesting fact Humans are consumers and so are most animals.

Habbitat

I learned in class about habitats, a habitat is where an organism lives. Each type of organism has a diffrent habitat. It provides everything you need to live. One interesting fact is Animals need the same thing to live so they live in the places that have them. Another interesting fact is Every organism has a unique habitat that provides for its needs. Organisms that live in the same area and share the resources form a community. There are a lot of diffrent habitats, but they all provide the varity things an organism needs.

Life on Jupiter?

While Nasa and the European space agency are looking for life on Mars. A determined core of scientist are lobbying for equal attention to a place they think can have life on it, Jupitors moon Europa. "Because of the well supported presence of water ice on Europa, Also the probability it has oceans. Europa can hold life on it," said Jere H. Lipps. Lipps took up the issue with 3 other scientist on sunday febuary 18 2007, at the annual meeting of American Association for the advancment of science in San Francisco. Lipps reviewed what they know about Europa and focased on the problems that needed to be solved before they search it for life. With years of experience studying Antartica Lipps knows where organisms can live on Europa. Lipps proposed 25 likely spots where organisms can live on Europa. He doesn't think life on the icy moon would be like ice on Earth. Lipps also noted the surface can be intense enough to kill an Earth like life. Lipps said we can have a spacecraft on Europa in 15 years we know where life can be. Now its up to Nasa engineers to determen when and how we get there.

cloning

January 8 2001 Cell Technology Inc. anounced a baby bull gaur named Noah was the first endangered species to be cloned. They cloned Noah to try to save endangered species from going extinct. Unfortanently Noah died from a disease not related to the process. Although this experiment deminstrated that it is possible to save endangered species by cloning.

Global warming is happening around the world, it is occuring alot in winter2007. This is happening because we are puting bad polution in the air and this is causing the weather to change. We have been doing this for many years and it is coming to a major effect. Global warming is causing hurrican and is making it warm in the winter. Many types of polution is buliding heat in the Earths surface. As polution bulids up to much heat is being trapped.
